Most third-party mice have scroll wheels and at least two buttons. I use Logitech wired mice on all our Macs, but they are especially useful on our old PowerBook that does not have the 'two-finger scroll' function of latter notebook trackpads.

I believe the first Apple mouse that had a track-wheel was the 'Mighty Mouse' introduced in 2005. However, it was not a very good mouse based on problems reported here.

To select an item on the screen, you must move the mouse to point at that item and then press and release (click) the left mouse button. If you know how to point and click, double-click, and point and drag the mouse, you’ve mastered the basics of controlling your Mac with a mouse. For example, you can change an option for how you secondary click (or Control-click) the mouse. The current Magic Mouse is the first Apple mouse since the ADB mice went to the rest home that I can tolerate. It has a smooth surface that functions like the trackpad, so scrolling does not involve a mechanical wheel. Consider one of those if hubby's computer is newer (system requirements ore included in the link below):
